This contest started at the end of last year, and we had so many great submissions I just had to keep it going! All of your nominations for best nurse mentor were incredibly inspiring. Finally, though, we have picked TWO winners: Bev Perry and Lena New!
Here is an excerpt from Jessica Perry, who nominated Bev Perry:
“Bev Perry is a nurse whose motto has always been to treat every patient and staff member as she would want to be treated herself. After 30 years, she still remembers what it is like to be a student or new nurse. When she trained a new nurse, she always said she trained them as if they would one day be the one taking care of her in times of sickness or injury.”
Bev was picked for a number of reasons. The first being that she obviously walks the walk as well as talks the talk. Bev submitted her own nomination, for our second winner, Lena New:
“I met Lena New in the early 1980s when I was a new RN just out of school working on the night shift. She took all the new nurses and doctors under her wing and nurtured them with her wisdom and years of experience. She wanted every one of us to be a success . . . I will always cherish the life lessons this lady taught me and every time I take care of a patient or train new staff, I try to pay it forward.”
Well, it’s clear Luna New’s effect on Bev Perry was then carried over to Jessica Perry! Nurses, way to pay it forward! Both will receive a complimentary Quick E! Pocket Guide!
…And our honorable mention nomination is just in time for Mother’s Day!
Krysti Bradley nominated her mother, who has had a large impact on Krysti’s career choices. Here is an excerpt on her nomination:
“I believe my best mentor, and the person who had the most influence on my becoming a nurse, is my mother. When I was younger, she used to come home from work as a pediatric psych nurse and tell us the great stories of the children she cared for … her stories used to fascinate me, and made me want to follow in her footsteps … All through nursing school, my mother walked me step-by-step through nursing care plans, medical terminology, med calculations, NCLEX questions, etc. I owe a lot of my success to her. At times I struggled, but she was always there to explain things to me another way, and to help me not give up. I graduated in December of 2008 and have been an RN, BSN for almost a year … My mother has been the best mentor and I have no regrets for following in her footsteps. I think back to those stories and the lives she has changed, and I am so glad I have the same opportunity. Now I am the one that comes home to tell her my great stories and love every minute of it!”
Congratulations to you all!
