Three major nurses’ organizations will be combining to form a new organization newly named National Nurses United, reports the San Francisco Business Times. The California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, the United American Nurses, and the Massachusetts Nurses Association are merging to form a membership that will be 150,000 strong.
A founding convention will be held in December in Scottsdale, AZ, according to the Times. Leaders of the group say the union will be the “largest registered nurses union and professional association in U.S. history.” In mid-February, the three organizations announced plans to merge and become an AFL-CIO affiliate.
Were you a member of the three organization now becoming one? What do you think of the merge?
If you need advice on whether to join a union, HCPro’s book, Stressed Out About Your First Year of Nursing, helps to explain your options. Here’s an excerpt:
If you plan to join an organization that is affiliated with a union, you need to understand not only what membership in the union entails, but what is expected of you as a union member. For example, union membership requires payment of annual dues and participation in actions such as strikes.
