We’ve all been there. You’re sitting on one side of a desk. Someone, who happens to be judging everything you do, is sitting on the other side. Thoughts are rushing through your head at dizzying speeds: “What are they thinking? Did they like that answer? Does my hair still look good? Should I check my breath?” Right up there with public speaking and snakes, interviewing is one of people’s biggest fears. But it doesn’t have to be. We’re here to help with 10 tips to change terrifying talks into comfortable chats.
Feel free to use this little list for whatever job you’re after-whether it’s your dream nursing job on the pediatric unit or a gig at a restaurant downtown that will land you a few extra bucks each month. Approach each interview in the same confident way and watch your stress disappear. Let’s get started:
- Be on time. Nothing says “Hey, I’m not prepared, so don’t hire me” quicker than showing up late to the interview. Do whatever you have to in order to be early. Get up at 4 a.m., leave an extra two hours in case of traffic, or sleep on the sidewalk. Just be on time.
- Have your stuff.
To land your dream job, you usually need a resume, references, and/or a cover letter. Bring it all with you. Even if you’ve emailed, sent, or faxed it all already, bring it just in case. The only thing worse than being unprepared is being late.- Clean yourself up.
Remember, you are trying to impress your future employer. Scrubs and Crocs aren’t going to get it done. Even if you’re aiming for a job where attire is casual, show up in a professional outfit. It reflects your personality and shows your desire for the position.- Practice SHE.
What’s SHE? It’s a simple acronym that leads to job interviewing success: smile, handshake, eye contact. Smile from the opening second of the meeting to make a great impression. People love positive people. Have a firm, confident handshake. It matters. And keep eye contact throughout. Looking away shows disinterest, boredom, and a lack of confidence.
